Genicular Nerve Block

Your knee joint is formed by bones, tendons, and ligaments and innervated by various nerves. Nerves responsible for transmitting pain signals from different areas of the knee to the brain are collectively referred to as genicular nerves. A genicular nerve block is a minimally invasive procedure where anesthetic medication is injected into one or more of the genicular nerves to control pain. Three main genicular nerves supply the knee joint: the superior lateral genicular nerve, the superior medial genicular nerve, and the inferior medial genicular nerve.

Viscosupplementation

Viscosupplementation refers to the injection of a hyaluronan preparation into the joint. Hyaluronan is a natural substance present in the joint fluid that assists in lubrication. It allows the smooth movement of the cartilage-covered articulating surfaces of the joint.

Nonoperative Treatments for ACL Injuries

The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is one of the four major ligaments located within the knee joint. It connects the femur (thighbone) to the tibia (shinbone). It plays a key role in holding the two bones within the knee and keeping the joint stable while your knee moves back and forth. An ACL injury is a sprain or a tear (total or partial) to the ligament. Young people involved in sports such as basketball, football, soccer and gymnastics are more prone to ACL injuries due to sudden changes in direction, acceleration, deceleration and repetitive movements.

Hyaluronic Acid Injections

The injection of hyaluronic acid, also called viscosupplementation, is a therapeutic treatment used to relieve joint pain. Also known as hyaluronan, hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body that provides lubrication to the joints. In certain conditions such as arthritis there is a depletion of hyaluronic acid that results in joint pain. Injected into the joint, hyaluronic acid restores the joint environment and relieves pain.

Genicular Nerve Radiofrequency Ablation

Genicular nerve radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of chronic knee pain from knee osteoarthritis. It is a new and innovative technique that decreases knee pain, improves joint function, and the quality of life in knee arthritis patients.
